Watching Hawaiian 102 on UHTV
I’m so glad this exists :3
Although the 1896 Laws of the Republic of Hawaiʻi didn’t “ban” the language, it did make Hawaiian a “foreign” language on the islands & made it so that no Hawaiian was allowed in schools (Even the all-Hawaiian Kamehameha schools)
Schools would discipline children they caught speaking the native language. Mary Kawena Pukui (who later because co-author of the first Hawaiian-English dictionary) was caught speaking it & was hit on the forehead, only allowed to eat bread & water for lunch & was denied home visits on holidays. Winona Beamer was expelled from Kamehameha Schools in 1937 for chanting Hawaiian.
Fortunately this state has gotten much better at respecting the Hawaiian culture (language, dance, music, religion/rituals, etc.)
(Please add anything. Point out anything problematic. I’m not a native Hawaiian so of course I can’t speak for them.)
people are marching down the street with MANA signs (x)
